(UW-ATHLETICS/MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) MADISON – The No. 23 Wisconsin men’s soccer team (4-0-0) defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles (2-1-1), 3-1, on Monday night. The Badgers scored twice in the first half and added one more after the break to secure the win.
How it Happened:
Wisconsin got off to a hot start bringing pressure early. Junior Emile Kisse got the Badgers on the scoreboard in the 14th minute after dribbling past multiple defenders and depositing the ball into the net.
Five minutes later Aidan Martinez came inches away from netting his second goal of the season, but his shot attempt rebounded off the right post. The Badgers were able to double their lead in the 27th minute when Markie Hrvojevic scored on a pass from Matthew Zachemski.
The Badgers conceded their first goal of the season in the 31st minute. Marquette’s Joey Buchanan headed in a corner kick from Mateo Stoka to get the Golden Eagles on the board. Both teams continued to trade opportunities, but Wisconsin held the 2-1 lead into the break.
Just two minutes into the second half a VAR review awarded Wisconsin a penalty kick. Redshirt junior Cristobal Porter took the PK and sent the ball into the top-left corner of the net to give the Badgers the two goal lead.
Wisconsin got another penalty kick opportunity in the 63rd minute after a second successful VAR review. Porter put his second PK attempt on target, but was denied by Marquette’s Cameron Simpson.
