NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A re-entry plan for the flooded downtown area of New London will start at noon.
The city posted details of its plan online Wednesday.
It includes traffic flow information for entering the flooded neighborhood that will have a manned checkpoint to only allow in individuals and companies necessary to cleanup operations.
Public traffic can enter the downtown area on Shawano Street from the north and the Pearl Street bridge from the south.
The Shawano Street bridge remains closed and North Water Street is in accessible from County S.
The only area affected with restricted access will be the flooded area west of Shiocton Street, between North Street and North Water Street.
The only entry/exit point to the flooded area is at the intersection of Shawano Street and Waupaca Street. Vehicles can only enter traveling south on Shawano Street north of Waupaca Street and only exit on Shawano Street going south from Waupaca Street.
All vehicles entering the flooded area detailed above will be processed at the checkpoint traveling south on Shawano Street at Waupaca Street.
An “Entry Pass” will be issued after a photograph is taken of all adult occupants in the vehicle, along with their identification and/or the vehicle license plate.
Checkpoint operations will be staffed by personnel from the city of New London. All photographs will be taken using fire department or law enforcement-issued equipment only.
The reason for this plan is to safeguard the welfare and property of residents impacted by the flooding by only allowing access to the flooded area to individuals and companies necessary to cleanup operations. Individuals will not be allowed to enter if they do not have a purpose to be there.
This comes on the same day New London students returned to in-person learning.
The New London Area Chamber Foundation announced Tuesday it has partnered with the city to establish a dedicated fund to support those affected by the flooding. 100% of donations will go directly back to New London residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations to aid in recovery and rebuilding.
