GENEVA, Oct 28 (Reuters) – The Geneva-based Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has appointed American physician Mark Dybul as the organization’s next Executive Director, it said in a statement on Wednesday.
• Dybul returns to the organization early next year after serving as its head from 2013-2017
• Dybul is a medicine professor at Georgetown University and co-founder/chief strategy officer of the Center for Global Health Practice and Impact with over 25 years’ experience in HIV and public health as a clinician, scientist, teacher and administrator
• Last year the Global Fund announced it will shift more of its resources to the very poorest countries to help them manage cuts in foreign aid
• Global aid cuts hit AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis prevention harder than treatment, saving lives short-term but risking future infection waves, the current Global Fund head Peter Sands said in September
• “At a time of profound change in global health, his vision and determination will be invaluable as we adapt to new realities and drive further progress toward ending AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria,” said Lady Roslyn Moraga, Chair of the Global Fund Board
