WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The former administrator of the Winneconne school district says she disagrees with the results of an investigation that preceded her retirement, a move she says she wasn’t planning to make.
Peggy Larson’s attorneys released a statement on Friday, two days after the school board accepted her resignation. She had been with the district for more than three decades.
She was placed on administrative leave in August pending an internal investigation.
In the statement, her lawyers said:
Peggy understands that records relating to the circumstances preceding her retirement may be released in response to public records requests. She wants to be clear that she disagrees with the investigation, its conclusions, and certain assertions made by the investigator. Those conclusions do not reflect Peggy’s understanding of the events or the values that have guided her throughout her career. At the same time, she did not believe that engaging in a public back-and-forth over those matters would be productive or serve the students and community she has spent so many years working on behalf of.
In an interview Thursday, school board president Kati Calewarts said “it’s unfortunate that as a board we can’t be super transparent with personnel issues.”
Calewarts and Vice President Dean Ackmann are facing recalls in part due to their connections with Moms for Liberty, a national group.
Calewarts said the decision for Larson to leave the district was mutual. However, Larson disagreed with that assertion.
“This is not when or how I expected my time with the District to end, and I would be less than honest if I said there wasn’t sadness in that,” Larson said in her statement.
Larson concluded her statement by thanking the community.
I am grateful for the students, families, colleagues, and community members who trusted and supported me over the years, and I am proud of what we accomplished together. I leave knowing how much this community has given me, and I look forward to whatever comes next.
