Mistrial declared in federal trial of Manitowoc County man accused in minors case

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A mistrial was declared during the federal trial of a Manitowoc County man who allegedly transported two separate minors across state lines with the “intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.”

Michael Kornely’s trial ended on its fourth day Thursday after evidence was introduced which the defense did not have time to prepare for, court records show.

“The court finds under 18 U.S.C. 3161(h)(7)(A) and (B)(iv) that the ends of justice served by taking this action outweigh the best interest of the public and the defendant in a speedy trial. The court makes this finding because taking into account the exercise of due diligence, the failure to grant such a continuance would deny counsel for the defendant or the attorney for the Government the reasonable time necessary for effective preparation,” court records state.
