BONDUEL, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Days before Bonduel’s Homecoming festivities were set to begin, the School District of Bonduel said the school was targeted by people from outside the community in a string of vandalism and disruptive acts that went beyond toilet papering.
Superintendent Joe Dawidziak said many people saw toilet papering at the school, but other actions “went much further and resulted in property damage, unnecessary disruption, and confusion as to the purpose behind it all.”
Dawidziak said the incidents included placing cheese slices on classroom windows, cameras, doors and vehicles; overturning a portable restroom; moving benches onto the football field; flipping picnic tables and benches; emptying garbage cans; removing a stop sign; placing large rocks in driveways; and other acts that required “significant time and effort to address.”
The district said it is continuing to work through the situation and trying to better understand what motivated the behavior.
Dawidziak praised the response from staff and students, calling it “nothing short of outstanding,” and said students have continued to represent the school “with tremendous character, maturity, and class.”
He said the district has spoken with students with a message to “continue to be the better example,” adding, “There is no value in lowering ourselves to the level of behavior we experienced.” Dawidziak also warned against retaliation, saying it “would serve no purpose and would reflect the very conduct we expect our students to rise above.”
Dawidziak said students, parents, staff and community members can expect the district to address the matter and “pursue any necessary consequences through the proper channels,” while reflecting the school’s values and community pride.
Looking ahead to Homecoming next week, Dawidziak encouraged students to celebrate and have fun, but said the district expects them to do so with “class, respect, and good judgment.” He said celebrating Homecoming “should never involve another school or community,” and urged students to keep the focus on Bonduel’s traditions and positive experiences.
