(UW ATHLETICS/MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS/GREEN BAY ATHLETICS/ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) – Decelise Champion and Charlie Fuerbringer of the Wisconsin volleyball team have been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Big Ten Setter of the Week for their performances last week against Marquette and Milwaukee, announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
In just her third match of her career, freshman Decelise Champion notched a 20-kill, 11 dig, three block performance against Marquette. Champion also clipped a .441 (20 kills – 5 errors – 34 attempts) hitting percentage against the Golden Eagles. The right side hitter played just one set against Milwaukee the next day, but quickly notched six kills on nine swings. In the five total sets she played in, Champion averaged 5.20 kills per set, 2.20 digs per set, and 5.50 points per set. This marks the first Big Ten honor of Champion’s career.
Setter Charlie Fuerbringer set the Badgers to a successful 2-0 week, defeating Marquette and Milwaukee last week. Fuerbringer averaged 13.50 assists per set and 2.75 digs per set over the course of eight sets. Against the Panthers, Fuerbringer achieved her sixth double-double of the season, 23rd of her career, with a 54 assist, 16 dig performance. The Hermosa Beach, Calif. native led Wisconsin to back-to-back matches with a team hitting percentage of .300 or better – .369 against the Golden Eagles and .326 against the Panthers. Fuerbringer has now earned Big Ten Setter of the Week six times in her career.
Next up, the Badgers begin Big Ten play and will host No. 20 Oregon (9-1) Thursday at 7 p.m. at the UW Field House. Wisconsin will then travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for a Sunday matinee at Mackey Arena to face the No. 10 Purdue Boilermakers (7-2).
Horizon League puts spotlight on Phoenix’ Pichelman: Green Bay Volleyball’s Diane Pichelman has been named the Under Armour #HLVB Player of the Week for the first time this season. Pichelman was last named the #HLVB Player of the Week on Sept. 29, 2025. It’s the second straight week a Phoenix has won the award, with Green Bay setter Alexa Hernandez winning it last week.
Pichelman led the Phoenix to a 2-0 home-opening weekend, with a pair of sweeps over Western Illinois. GB has now won five straight heading into the HL schedule.
Pichelman averaged 10.0 kills per match with a .655 attacking percentage, including 12 kills on an .857 percentage. The junior also averaged 2.5 blocks per match.
The Phoenix is set to open its Horizon League home slate this weekend when they host Oakland on Friday and Saturday. The Friday matchup will be at 6 p.m. CT, while the Saturday match will start at 2 p.m. CT.
Marquette’s Hurd and Christianson honored by BIG EAST: Mia Hurd and Haley Christianson have been recognized by the BIG EAST for their performances against Eastern Illinois, with Hurd earning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors and Christianson landing on the Weekly Honor Roll. Hurd made two saves in the Golden Eagles’ 3-1 victory, earning her fifth-straight weekly conference honor and third Goalkeeper of the Week selection of the season. Christianson recorded the first multi-goal game of her career, scoring twice on three shots on goal to account for two of Marquette’s three goals.
Marquette volleyball gets recognized: Junior outside hitter Carson Tyler (Offensive Player of the Week) and freshman setter Luanna Markus (Weekly Honor Roll) both earned weekly honors from the BIG EAST, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Tyler led the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 week with 4.67 kills and 5.71 points per set. She also contributed 29 digs, 11 blocks, and seven aces. The junior opened the week with 16 kills, eight digs, and two blocks at No. 6 Wisconsin before notching a double-double with 28 kills and 14 digs in a 3-2 victory over St. Thomas. Tyler concluded the weekend with 12 kills, seven digs, five blocks, and two aces in a sweep of Milwaukee.
Marquette soccer hosts UW-Milwaukee: The Marquette University men’s soccer team (5-2-1) steps out of conference play on Tuesday night, hosting the the Milwaukee Cup. Kickoff between MU and Milwaukee (4-3-2) is set for 6 p.m. CT at Valley Fields and will stream on ESPN+.
Busy week for St. Norbert teams: The last full week of September sees St. Norbert College in several key events throughout the week.
Highlights this week include football hosting Wisconsin Lutheran College, ACHA hockey’s home opener against UW-Oshkosh and women’s tennis competing at the ITA Regional Tournament.
