HARRISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A false emergency call that claimed a stabbing and a fatal shooting prompted a large law enforcement and emergency response to a home in the Village of Harrison on Sept. 15, authorities said.
At about 6:48 p.m., the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Winding Trail Drive after a reported emergency. The report was later determined to be false in an incident commonly known as “swatting.”
During the initial call, the caller reported that he had been stabbed in the chest and had shot his wife with a firearm. The caller also claimed his wife was deceased.
Deputies contacted the homeowner and determined there were no signs of a homicide, weapons-related incident or other emergency at the residence. Deputies also determined there is no ongoing threat to the public related to the incident.
Swatting is a criminal act in which someone makes a false emergency report intended to prompt a significant law enforcement, fire or EMS response. Authorities said these incidents are inherently dangerous because responding personnel must treat reported emergencies as legitimate until they can safely determine otherwise. False emergency reports also place the public and first responders at risk and divert law enforcement, fire and EMS resources from legitimate calls for service.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by Harrison Fire Rescue, Gold Cross Ambulance and Brillion Police.
