GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The City of Green Bay and the Oneida Nation broke ground on new splashpad at Ted Fritsch Park on Green Bay’s west side Friday evening.
The splashpad will feature ground spray sites, a seating area with an overhead spray feature, and an interactive water area. An Oneida dedication boulder will also be present on the splashpad’s east side. The splashpad will be located directly east of the playground at Ted Fritsch Park.
In addition to creating the new fun space for kids, Green Bay Parks, Recreation, and Forestry is also working on site-wide stormwater management improvements to the park.
“We’re really excited with this splashpad,” said Green Bay Parks Director Dan Ditscheit. “The concept is a little grander than some of our other splashpads throughout the city, but it really fit everyone’s missions and goals, so we’re really proud of it.”
Ditscheit read a description from consultants working on the splashpad’s design. “It’s designed as a serpentine river-like journey. The space invites exploration, storytelling, and reflection while connecting visitors to nature through the use of boulders and other natural materials. Together, these elements create a destination that celebrates the power of water, the richness of the landscape, and the connections that bring the communities together,” Ditscheit read.
Friday night’s groundbreaking coincided with the Ted Fritsch Park Neighborhood Association’s yearly back to school event.
The Oneida Nation will donate $100,000 toward the splashpad construction.
Construction on the splashpad is scheduled to begin in the fall. It is anticipated to open next summer.
