(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Greenville village board has approved a one-year data center moratorium, designed to give the village time to examine its effects.
The board approved the measure 5-0, intending village staff to review data centers’ effects on health, safety, the general welfare of residents, businesses, visitors and the general public over the next year.
“The purpose of the moratorium is to provide the Village of Greenville with adequate time to assess the impacts and secondary effects of data centers and promote meaningful development and implementation of Greenville General Ordinances with regard to such,” the resolution reads. “The moratorium is necessary to protect the health, safety and general welfare of the Village of Greenville residents, businesses and visitors.”
Greenville was considering implementing a data center moratorium in May, when the village’s Planning Commission recommended the Village Board adopt a moratorium ordinance.
“This prevents us from having anybody come in and surprise (us),” said Village President Jack Anderson at the May 18 Planning Commission meeting. “Not only our staff, but all of us in the room that live here or work here, or are just here because we love this community.”
The center prohibits the building of a data center of 10,000 or more square feet. Existing telecommunications center greater than 10,000 square feet may stay but structural repairs and alterations cannot exceed 50% of total assessed value of building or structure.
