GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Grand Chute Town Board adopted a $30 wheel tax, set to take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
The fee will be applied to all registered vehicles in the town and collected by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, which will forward the funds on to the town no later than 30 days after the end of the month in which it is collected.
According to WisDOT, there were 20,705 eligible vehicles registered in Grand Chute in 2025. Based upon this figure, the revenue that will be generated through the annual registration fee is estimated to be $621,150.
The funds will be go into a town special revenue account and used for transportation related purposes, such as roadway maintenance.
During a recent strategic planning survey of town residents, numerous responses were received regarding roads, and 47% of respondents expressed some level of dissatisfaction with the condition of town roads.
A key goal of the registration fee is to improve and preserve the town’s roadway infrastructure, while delaying the need for more costly reconstruction.
In enacting this ordinance, the town of Grand Chute joins 56 other municipalities and 14 counties in the state of Wisconsin that have adopted a wheel tax. These annual fees range from $10.00 to $50.00.
Town residents are reminded to verify on their License Plate Renewal Notice that their vehicle is actually kept in the Town of Grand Chute, as the United States Postal Service designates the City of Appleton as the official mailing address for zip codes 54911, 54913, and 54914.
Residents can check or correct their specific vehicle registration municipality online.
