FREMONT, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Waters continued to rise in Fremont on Sunday despite not receiving rain on Saturday.
This happened because the Wolf River flows down from Shiocton and New London.
The flooding spanned about 500 feet off the river and into downtown Fremont on Wednesday night, the water levels had only reached the edge of the riverfront buildings.
The water was waist-deep for the few people that ventured into the water.
“It just keeps rising and rising,” said Joe Maneno, a Fremont resident.
Added Fremont resident Scott Laue: “Yesterday it was only across maybe half our yard, and now it’s way up here,” motioning nearly up to the front of his house.
The river made its way through neighborhoods, and closed some roads even a quarter of a mile away from the Wolf River.
Some roads were over a foot deep.
Even the houses that are dry were still impacted.
“I have a little lumber yard, all the wood came in floating from everywhere, wherever it came from, I don’t know,” said Maneno. “But I got a big mess over here. But I feel sorry for everyone who’s here because it’s gonna get worse and worse before it starts going down.”
The village asked to evacuate with a shelter available at Hortonville High School. The city of New London released an update Sunday afternoon saying the shelter at the Hortonville High School Field House will close at 7:00 a.m. Monday due to a lack of overnight use. The shelter in Black Creek at St. John’s United Church of Christ will remain open.
Sandbags are ready for those still battling the waters.
“There’s been a lot of people that have showed up and people making sandbags and hauling them and everything else,” said Laue. “It’s just it’s good to see a community come together.”
According to an update from Waupaca County, all areas north of Highway 110 and west of the river in the Village of Fremont will be exit only by vehicle.
Exceptions may be made for individuals bringing sandbags or pumps only until 10:00 a.m.
Those who need exceptions can contact the Sherriff’s Office (715-258-4466) and request to speak with Fremont Operations.
