GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two state officials have denied any wrongdoing in connection with the death of Green Bay Correctional Institution inmate Micah Laureano, who was killed by his cellmate.
Laureano was strangled by Jackson Vogel on Aug. 27, 2024. Vogel was convicted in June of the murder and hate crime for targeting Laureano due to his race and sexual orientation, and is serving a life prison term with no chance at parole.
After Laureano’s murder, his mother, Phyllis, filed a federal civil rights wrongful death lawsuit, claiming Department of Corrections Sec. Jared Hoy and GBCI Warden Christopher Stevens were responsible for her son’s death.
“Defendants’ willful and deliberate indifference to Mr. Laureano’s safety resulted in him being murdered by his cellmate,” the suit states.
But in an 11-page response filed Friday, Hoy and Stevens denied these claims.
Defendants DENY engaging in any discriminatory treatment or practices; DENY violating any of Micah Laureano’s (Laureano) rights and engaging in any unlawful actions; and DENY Plaintiff is entitled to any of the relief she seeks,” the answer states.
The response, signed by Attorney General Josh Kaul, asks for the case to be dismissed. No hearings have been scheduled in the case.
