SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After causing some confusion in Shawano County, the Trump administration has removed its online list of ‘sanctuary jurisdictions.’
A list of more than 500 “sanctuary jurisdictions” no longer appears on the Department of Homeland Security’s website after receiving criticism for including jurisdictions that have actively supported the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
This week, there is now a “Page Not Found” error message in its place.
Included on that list was Shawano County, as well as Dane County and the cities of Madison and Milwaukee.
The Department of Homeland Security said it would be sending each jurisdiction on the list a formal notification that the government has deemed them uncooperative with federal immigration enforcement and whether they’re believed those jurisdictions to be in violation of any federal criminal statutes.
Shawano County administrator, Jim Davel, said it must have been a clerical error as 67% of the county voted for Trump.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office says it’s in contact with Congressman Tony Wied for clarity on the matter.
“At present, we continue to engage with federal agencies to resolve this issue. Shawano County does not identify as a sanctuary jurisdiction and remains committed to upholding federal immigration laws and policies,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement released Monday.
