(WTAQ-WLUK) — An annual natural spectacle in Northeast Wisconsin is about to get started.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says sturgeon from the Lake Winnebago system have been seen throughout the Wolf River, preparing to spawn. The fish typically spawn when the water is about 53 degrees; the water temperature was measured at 52 degrees on Thursday.
Popular spots to view the large fish are at Bamboo Bend in Shiocton, the Wolf River Sturgeon Trail near New London and the Shawano Dam.
Separately, sturgeon from Lake Michigan spawn in the Fox River at De Pere and the Peshtigo River at Peshtigo. Activity there is not expected for a few weeks, the DNR says.
