GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A new name has entered into what’s becoming a crowded field of Republicans looking to win the U.S. Congressional seat soon to be empty when NE Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher leaves office later this month.
“Our career politicians are failing us and there’s way too much at stake in this country for me to stay on the sidelines,” Tony Wied said.
Wied, the former owner of six Dino Stop gas stations, is the latest candidate to enter the race.
“I was in business for 30 years and I was fortunate enough to sell my business and I’m interested in serving this country,” Wied said. “I love America and I have the ability and I have the time to spend to really helping America and getting involved and fighting for change.”
Wied is the third Republican to enter into the race for a district that’s been a historical stronghold for the party. The lone Democrat in the mix, OBGYN Dr. Kristin Lyerly, is looking to buck that trend.
As far as the other Republicans in the race, they’re now facing a Donald Trump-backed candidate in Wied.
In a post on Trump’s social media site, Truth Social, the former president said he was putting his full support behind Wied. He also called on former State Senator Roger Roth to drop out. Roth issued this statement Monday:
“As the only veteran in this race, I know what it means to serve. My wife and I Iook at our country, and for the sake of our children, know we have to fight to preserve and protect what makes America great. I will win this race and help win Wisconsin for Donald Trump this November.”
“I’m incredibly honored to have President Trump’s endorsement,” Wied said. “It’s the greatest honor of my life to have it and I’m looking forward with President Trump to work on the big issues working in Washington right now.”
Trump’s post did not mention State Senator Andre Jacque, who’s also running for Gallagher’s seat. Jacque sent out this statement:
“I don’t really know anything about Tony Wied other than when I knocked on his door and he put my sign in his yard. I’m proud to be the strong conservative candidate for this seat, with the proven track record of standing up for conservative values and common sense across the board. I’m the grassroots conservative candidate in this race. The response has been fantastic and I look forward to continuing to earn people’s votes with the hard work and dedication to principle I’ve always had.”
Unless one of the three current Republican candidates drops out of the race, there will be a Republican primary in August.
