OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A woman who took a gun from an Oconto Falls police officer and shot the officer will be sentenced after dropping her insanity plea.
Alisha Kocken, 31, has previously pleaded guilty to four counts: attempted first-degree intentional homicide, resisting an officer, battery to an officer, and disarming a peace officer for the Aug. 6, 2021 confrontation with Officer Nicole Blaskowski.
However, she also had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. As a result, a jury trial was scheduled for next week to determine if she suffered from a mental disease at the time of the offense, and if that condition prevented her conforming her actions to the law. If the jury would have decided Kocken did not suffer from a mental disease and could discern right from wrong, she would face a prison term. If Kocken did suffer from a psychiatric condition, she would be committed to a secure mental health facility.
However, in court Thursday, the mental disease plea was dropped, clearing the way for her sentencing. That is scheduled for June 11, when prosecutors and Kocken will make a joint recommendation for a 13-year prison sentence, according to court records.
Kocken was charged after an incident where police were called to an Oconto Falls home. There was a physical confrontation between Kocken and Blaskowski. At one point, Kocken grabbed Blaskowski’s gun and shot the officer, grazing her head and hitting her ballistic vest. Blaskowski was later released from the hospital.
