DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) — A local educator is running for the America’s Favorite Teacher contest through Reader’s Digest.
Becky Deeg teaches Spanish at West De Pere High School. She’s been teaching in West De Pere for the past 16 years, and has taught for 17 years total.
She shared how she got involved in the contest.
“Somebody shared it with me, and I saw there was a pretty big prize so I thought ‘Well, I’ll try my luck and just throw my name in there,” then it kind of just took off,” said Deeg.
Deeg says her favorite part of the contest so far has been the students.
“It’s been really cool to have former students reach out and share how I’ve impacted them; that’s been the most beautiful part,” said Deeg. “One story actually brought tears to my eyes. I had no idea I had that affect on somebody.”
The winner will be announced in early June; but the first round of cuts is Thursday, April 4.
The grand prize winner gets a trip for two to Hawaii, $250 thousand, and will appear in Reader’s Digest.
Deeg says if she wins, she would use some of the money for a family trip with her husband and four kids, give some money back to the school, and put some money aside for her children’s college.
