GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new effort in Green Bay aims to make sure all residents have access to fresh and healthy food.
On Broadway Inc. received a grant of more than $23,000 to coordinate a fresh food drive for area homeless shelters.
The money comes from a Brown County Health & Human Services grant from its 2023 allocation of the American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA).
The food drive helps link local food producers and growers with people who face food insecurity and homelessness.
On Broadway Inc. executive director, Brian Johnson, says they’re excited to be able to not only support local farmers but help those in need.
“As we look at the Farmers Market On Broadway, it has over 100 vendors every single week and 60% of those vendors are either fresh produce or processed foods; that’s double the state average. So it provides a lot of opportunities for our shelters to be able to shop locally in our downtown core,” he said.
Johnson says the fresh food drive will work much like the EBT program in which individuals who are eligible can receive double the benefits through its partnership with Wello.
The On Broadway Farmers Market occurs on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. through September.
