KIMBERLY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A private security officer fired shots at a suspect following a theft at a downtown Kimberly business Monday.
Fox Valley Metro police say the robbery was reported just after 2 p.m. at Voecks’ Fox Valley Coin and Diamonds Etc., 103 E. Kimberly Ave. Officers determined a man went into the store, and stole something. He then ran out and got into a vehicle.
The security officer ran out after the man. Police say the man drove toward the security officer. At that point, the security officer fired several rounds from a handgun at the vehicle. The thief eventually drove off, and the security officer was not hurt.
Later Monday, Winnebago County sheriff’s officials arrested the suspected thief near the town of Wolf River, some 30 miles away.
Police are recommending the 37-year-old man be charged with felony theft in Outagamie County. The suspect’s name was not released.
Officials are also reviewing the firing of shots by the private security officer.
The incident led to a 30-minute lockdown at Mapleview Intermediate School, which is directly behind the business, and three other schools in Kimberly.
