MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — There are now 46 active cases of the COVID-19 Coronavirus in Wisconsin, including the first in Outagamie County.
Numbers released Monday brought the total cases by county to 13 in Milwaukee County, 11 in Fond Du Lac County, 10 in Dane County, three each in Sheboygan, Waukesha, and Winnebago Counties, and one each in Outagamie, Pierce, Racine, and Wood Counties.
“We’re detecting more cases of the disease in Wisconsin residents who have not traveled out of state,” said Bureau of Infectious Diseases Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ryan Westergaard. “This means the disease is spreading in Wisconsin Communities.”
The new numbers come as Governor Tony Evers has banned gatherings of more than 50 people in the state.
“This isn’t a decision I made lightly,” Evers said during a Monday press briefing. “We understand it will have an impact on Wisconsin workers, families, businesses, and communities.”
Grocery Stores, Hospitals, Food Pantries, and Childcare Centers are exempt from the order. The ban will be enforced by local police departments and violators could face jail time or a fine.
“In the coming days and weeks, there are going to be more disruptions in your lives,” DHS Secretary Designate Andrea Palm said. “I know this is difficult, but this how we are going to prevent more people from being exposed to and becoming infected with COVID-19.”
