MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Lake Winnebago’s sturgeon spearing season came to a close at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.
It is the first time the season closed early since 2015.
Waverly Beach in Menasha’s registration station did not see much traffic until about 10 a.m.
Paul Zwick took a UTV off Lower Cliff boat landing and caught his trophy fish.
Zwick said, “Last year I got one opening day and I said to my wife and boy that I was going to spear one on the last day. And I got lucky and I did…I spent two and a half, three weeks scouting, looking for him and it finally paid off.”
The Department of Natural Resources Senior Fisheries Biologist out of Shawano said its been a successful season thanks to water clarity and early ice– with over 12 hundred on Lake Winnebago alone, he said its the highest harvest they have seen in awhile.
