GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Snow is expected to fall just before Thanksgiving and Green Bay police are issuing safety winter driving reminders.
On Wednesday, about 1 to 4 inches of snow is expected for Northeast Wisconsin and as much as 18 inches could drop in the U.P.
In addition to snow, it will be windy, with wind gusts up to 50 mph at times, especially in the afternoon.
Driving conditions could be hazardous at times.
Ahead of the snow, police are reminding drivers of the “Steer It, Clear It” law and urging everyone to use extra caution on the roads.
If you are involved in a minor crash, remember: “If you can steer it, clear it!” per the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). If no one is injured and your vehicle can be driven, steer it out of traffic, but never risk injury by attempting to physically push a vehicle. If your vehicle cannot be driven or injuries occurred, call 911. Also, to help be seen, turn on your hazard lights or raise the hood.
“We recently responded to a multi-vehicle crash on the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge, and vehicles failing to move out of the lane of travel may have contributed to secondary crashes. Secondary crashes—especially during wintry weather and limited visibility—are common and often preventable,” said Traffic Sergeant Sean Hamill of the Green Bay Police Department.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and plan for additional travel time. It’s always a good idea to check 511 for current winter road conditions before you head out.
