OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — More than two dozen volunteers, including the governor of Wisconsin, helped plant trees at an Oshkosh park Thursday.
In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation (ADF) through the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers (GSGP), 40 trees were donated to the city by Cummins Inc.
Volunteers got a little muddy planting the trees at Lakeshore Park. Governor Tony Evers also stopped by to help.
Oshkosh Landscape Operations Manager Travis Dirks says the park, which was a former golf course, needed the trees. He was on hand to show the volunteers how to properly plant the trees. Proper planting helps with the longevity of the tree and can prevent them from storm damage, Dirks explained.
“Trees are resilient, yes. If you throw them in a hole, they will grow, but planting them the proper way gives them that extra little step up to thrive and to really grow and showcase what they have,” he said.
24 different species of trees were planted in the park, including Oak, Hawthorn, Hemlock, Maple and Elm.
