MENOMINEE, Mich. (WTAQ-WLUK) — Voters in Menominee, Michigan are in favor of limiting the number of dispensaries in the city, according to unofficial results.
For the second time in three months, Menominee, Michigan residents were asked whether to limit the number of cannabis dispensaries in their city.
The ordinance would limit the number of dispensaries to nine. Menominee has already issued licenses to nine dispensaries –and according to Mayor Casey Hoffman, another four are trying to open up shop.
Since the state legalized recreational marijuana in 2018, more and more pot shops have been opening in Menominee. Initially, there was a limit on the number of dispensary licenses, but after a legal battle, the city’s cap was removed.
In early August, 85% of voters said “yes” to an amendment that would have allowed only nine licenses at one time. But a few weeks later, a judge ruled that vote was invalid, saying Michigan marijuana law requires ballot initiatives to be held on the next regular election, which state law defines as an election when a person running for office is on the ballot. That wasn’t the case in the August election.
