OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As fireworks stores and stands get ready for the Fourth of July holiday rush, the Oshkosh Police Department is reminding residents of its ordinances.
“For the illegal fireworks, those are Roman candles, firecrackers, bottle rockets, mortars — basically, anything that explodes or leaves the ground,” explained Officer Kate Mann.
Those fireworks require a special permit to use legally.
Failure to comply with the ordinance could land you a $295 fine for your first offense, and as high as $1,400 on the third offense after conviction.
The department’s proactive work is not stopping there.
“We are going to be going to different locations that sell fireworks to make sure that they are not selling illegal fireworks to people that do not have the permits that they need,” said Mann.
Firework stores across the state are taking the extra step to make sure residents know what their firework permit allows.
That includes Ryley Harlow, general manager at Phantom Fireworks in Racine.
“They would have to discuss that with their municipality — whether it’s a village, township — what their rules and requirements are for lighting fireworks off,” Harlow explained. “Some, I believe, do not allow it at all, while some require you to go through their municipality to buy a permit to discharge the fireworks as well.”
Harlow added that firework safety is nothing to joke about.
“Adults only. There should be no alcohol when you’re lighting the fireworks off. Really, it’s that common sense. Respect the firework. It is an explosive. Just being cautious while you’re using them,” Harlow said.
