(UW ATHLETICS) COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Ryland Mosley goal with 2:42 left wasn’t enough as the Wisconsin men’s hockey team fell, 3-2, to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday night at Nationwide Arena.
With the loss, the Badgers are eliminated from the Big Ten tournament, falling 2-games-to-1 in the best-of-three quarterfinal and marking the end of their season.
Ohio State (23-12-2) opened the scoring 6:01 into the first period before Wisconsin’s (13-21-3) Quinn Finley evened the score at one 59 seconds later on the power play. The game remained tied, 1-1, until OSU scored twice in the third period to take a 3-1 lead. Ryland Mosley scored once more for Wisconsin with 2:42 remaining in the game to try and start a comeback, but the Badgers fell with a final score of 3-2.
How it Happened
Ohio State got on the board first at 6:02 into the first period after Jake Rozzi capitalized on a misplay behind the Wisconsin net.
Fifty-nine seconds later at 7:01 into the opening frame, sophomore forward Finley evened the score at one on the power play. Near the left side boards in the OSU zone, freshman forward Gavin Morrissey passed to graduate student forward Cody Lasoksy by the left side of the net. Laskosky then passed to Finley at the bottom of the right face-off circle, who dropped to his knee and let a one-time shot fly to record his 20th goal of the season.
The game stayed 1-1 until 9:37 of the third period when Davis Burnside scored during an OSU power play to make it a 2-1 game.
Max Montes extended the Buckeyes’ lead at 12:43 of the third period.
The Badgers continued to push to try and tie the game with graduate student forward Mosley scoring at 17:18 into the third to make it 3-2. At the middle of the Buckeyes’ blue line, graduate student defenseman Anthony Kehrer passed to his left to find Finley. Finley then took a shot that Mosley redirected home to tally his 18th goal of the season.
Wisconsin was unable to tie the game in the final 2:42 of regulation to force overtime and fell, 3-2.
Wisconsin went 1-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill. UW finished the contest with a 31-28 advantage in shots on goal.
Notes to know:
– Quinn Finley is the first Badger to score 20 goals in a season since Cole Caufield scored 30 in 2020-21. He is also the first Badger to reach the 40-point mark since Caufield and Linus Weissbach each had 40+ that same year
