DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — In Door County, Potawatomi State Park is getting ready for Saturday’s Winter Trails Day.
“It’s anywhere from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We have a guided hike. That’s going to be happening at 11:30 with some of our friends members,” said Traci Bournoville, Friends of Potawatomi State Park president.
Bournoville says people are also able to branch out and cross-country ski, snow shoe or hike on their own.
“One of the things that Potawatomi is known for is that we are the start of the Eastern Terminus of the Ice Age Trail, so we’re trying to promote that. We did become an Ice Age Trail Community,” she said.
After the trekking down miles of trails, there will be campfires and refreshments at the picnic shelter as well.
It is the third year Winter Trails Day is being held at Potawatomi. Bournoville says holding it in the middle of February presents a unique opportunity.
“A lot of the times in the state parks, they do a first day hike on Jan. 1. And because we have so many wonderful state parks in Door County, you can’t be here, you can’t be there, you can’t be everywhere. So we decided to do it a different time. So that way, we kind of get a little bit of recognition and we hope people will come out and explore Potawatomi if they’ve never done it before,” she said.
Saturday’s trails day event is free, but a state park vehicle admission pass is required.
