FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A porch fire in Fond du Lac was sparked by improperly discarded smoking materials, according to officials.
Fond du Lac Fire Rescue was dispatched to 524 S. Main Street shortly after 1:30 p.m. Friday for a report of a fire on a home’s front porch.
When crews arrived, a neighbor was working to extinguish the flames. Firefighters finished the job and overhauled the porch area, as well as a bit of the siding around the porch. No one was injured.
Investigators determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. Authorities say incidents like these are “completely preventable.”
“This fire could have had much different results if not for the quick actions taken by neighbors in calling in the fire as well as helping with the fire extinguishers,” a news release states. “Fond du Lac Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone that the only safe way to discard smoking materials is in an appropriate fire-proof receptacle.”
