(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) – The Marquette University men’s basketball team (16-3, 7-1 BIG EAST) returns to Fiserv Forum on Friday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. CT to host Villanova (12-8, 5-4 BIG EAST) in league action. Friday’s outing is the program’s annual Gold Out, in support of the American Cancer Society and former university president Dr. Michael R. Lovell, who lost his battle with cancer in June of 2024. Following the matchup with the Wildcats, MU travels to Butler on Jan. 28.
Series With Wildcats Dates Back To 1960
Villanova holds a 27-19 advantage over Marquette in an all-time series that dates back to 1960.
Along with regular season and tournament matchups in league play, the two teams also squared off in the 1963 National Invitation Tournament and the 1980 NCAA Championship. Marquette downed the Wildcats 66-58 in the NIT, but fell 77-59 in the opening round of the NCAA’s in Providence, R.I.
The Wildcats have been ranked in the top-15 in 19 of the last 25 meetings against Marquette, including four matchups as the top-ranked team in the land, but the Golden Eagles have claimed each of the last seven outings.
Marquette earned victories in each of the three meetings in 2023-24, most recently a 71-65 overtime decision on March 14, 2024 in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST tourney.
