MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — City officials have taken another step toward redeveloping the long-vacant Mirro factory site.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels says the city council approved the winning bid for removing remaining contaminated soil, demolishing a concrete slab and utility tunnel and bringing in new topsoil and fill.
The work will be paid for through a nearly $2 million grant from the federal infrastructure law.
Work is expected to begin in March or April.
The city is also working with a developer who has proposed a workforce housing project that would have around 59 units. The developer plans to apply for tax credits; if those are approved, work could begin in the summer or fall.
Demolition of the former Mirro Aluminum Company began in 2017. The aluminum cookware company closed shop in 2003.
