NORTHEAST WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wildfires sweeping through Southern California continue to leave deep scars on the community.
Residents are fleeing from massive, fast-moving wildfires that are destroying their homes.
“Thousands of people have lost their homes due to this fire. We are trying to pitch in and help people as best as we can,” says Jennifer Warren, American Red Cross Wisconsin Region.
Thursday afternoon, The American Red Cross of Wisconsin sent 5 volunteers to help the struggling community.
A combination of dry conditions and high winds continue to feed the fires in the Los Angeles area.
Warren says, “With the winds and stuff, it was getting worse and not better. So, we definitely decided that we needed to send people to help out.”
Prepared with more volunteers on standby, the Red Cross’ Jen Warren says they are focused on making sure everyone has a safe place to stay.
“We have shelters set up already. We are working with different partners and other community organizations out there to staff these shelters, bring in food, and any other necessities that the people who are impacted by these fires might need,” says Warren.
Bringing light to the darkness, Door County Candle Company is raising funds for the American Red Cross.
The “Golden State” candle serves as a token of resiliency, and a shared promise to help rebuild what has been lost.
The owner Christiana Trapani says, “the messages we have gotten about people thanking us because their families homes have burned down or they have been evacuated. It is just incredible all of the people this brings together.”
Donating 100% of the profits, they have raised over $2,400 since Thursday’s launch.
