GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Georgia-Pacific listed its former Day Street mill on the city’s east side for sale, and the city will discuss possible uses for the 50-acre riverfront site on Monday.
Operations at the 122-year-old paper mill ended in September 2023. It was the birthplace of Quilted Northern Tissue, and a reason the city has been recognized as the “toilet paper capital of world.” Georgia-Pacific recently spent $500 million to add on to the Broadway mill, on the other side of the Fox River.
According to the listing on Colliers, the mill at 500 Day Street is listed as an “in-fill industrial development opportunity.” There are six parcels, served by two rail spurs. The buildings total about 700,000 square feet of space. A price is not listed.
In anticipation of the sale, the Green Bay Plan Commission will consider changing the zoning from industrial land-use to downtown land-use. The change would also cover the former Wisconsin Public Service headquarters site across the East River from the paper mill.
“With these two significant downtown riverfront properties becoming available for sale and redevelopment, the City initiated a more thorough and broader look at land uses in the area and believe changes are needed at this time,” the staff report states.
Among the possible benefits of the change cited:
Potential for much more rapid redevelopment as land use options (permitted uses) are drastically increased from industrial to mixed uses. Additionally, potential employment opportunities for service and commercial activities generally outnumber industrial warehousing and many modern manufacturing employment numbers” and “Higher and better use of the waterfront potentially including shore improvements and riverfront access to the public.
The meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday in room 604 of City Hall, 100 N. Jefferson St.
