GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A draft study on the future of the Fox River State Trail calls for several improvements but no widening of the popular path. A public meeting to discuss the report will be held Thursday.
The study gathered input to guide future management of the 13.9-mile trail, which opened in 2001. More than 2,300 responses were collected.
“The Fox River State Trail has existed in our community for over 24 years and this Study reaffirms the value and importance this specific trail plays in our community,” said Parks Director Matt Kriese. “The trail is one of the busiest in the state of Wisconsin and our Department saw the need to update the Study to make certain we are meeting the current needs of all users.”
Among the recommendations in the 43-page draft report:
- Keeping the current hours of operation of 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Allowing electric bicycles, but not electric scooters
- If & where additional lighting is needed, “dark sky compliant” lighting should be installed
- Paving the trail from Lasee Road to Greenleaf, but not south of Greenleaf
- Designing accommodations for the trail when the Southern Bridge Connector is built at Rockland Road
- Despite requests, widening of the trail is not recommended
The final draft of the report will be revealed at a Jan. 16 meeting at the Brown County Kress Library, 333 N. Broadway, De Pere., at 5:30 p.m.
