GREEN LAKE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Vandalism to traffic signs in the Green Lake County area is prompting a warning from officials.
There has been “a significant amount” of sign vandalism incidents, according to a Facebook post Tuesday from the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
A photo included in the post shows a stop sign in the town of Brooklyn at Skunk Hollow Road that was shot “in a neighborhood with homes nearby” and then pushed over by a vehicle.
Chief Deputy Matt VandeKolk said, “We had, overnight, a report that came in this morning. A stop sign had been apparently been shot by two bullets, and then pushed over by a vehicle. Damaging the sign itself and then wrecking the post.”
VandeKolk said this stop sign is just one of many which have been vandalized across the county.
“As you drive through the community, you’ll see, once in a while you’ll see signs that have been shot or damaged. It just reflects poorly, I think on our community. Especially Green Lake County, we care about our community.”
Authorities say not only is this a waste of money, but it also puts people’s lives at risk.
These acts of vandalism are dangerous and pointless. Our townships and municipalities have tight budgets and limited resources to maintain our roads and signs. A crash with injuries or death could have resulted from the lack of a stop sign.
