APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Appleton Area School District’s new elementary school is getting closer to completion, and now we’re getting an inside look at the new building.
Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction workers are in the home stretch as excitement mounts for Appleton’s new Sandy Slope Elementary School. But, there’s still plenty of work to be done in the coming months.
“Hopefully we have another good year for construction purposes and we’ll continue to be on time and on budget,” Appleton Area School District Superintendent Greg Hartjes said.
The $35M project marks the first school to be built in over 30 years for the Appleton Area School District. Sandy Slope will have a 600 student capacity for grades K-5, solving the issue of over crowding in their other elementary schools.
“Specifically around this area is where we had our most crowded elementary school and our most growth that is occurring and will continue to occur,” Hartjes said.
The school is located on Appleton’s north side. It has two stories, a full-size gymnasium, and uses a unique “pod” concept for its classrooms. This means classrooms are organized in grade-level “neighborhoods” and share a common space.
While the school district is excited for the new development, it’s the students they’re most looking forward to serving.
“When you think about all the families that are going to be impacted, all the students that are going to be impacted, this is now going to become their neighborhood elementary school and that’s really exciting for them,” Hartjes said.
At a meeting last Monday, the school board discussed tentative boundaries for the school. Highway 41 is expected to split the boundary between Huntley and Sandy Slope Elementary Schools. A final decision will be made at it’s meeting on Dec. 9.
Sandy Slope Elementary is expected to open in September 2025.
