ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Village of Ashwaubenon is fine-tuning some of its rules ahead of the big three-day NFL Draft that will bring hundreds of thousands of people to our area in late April.
On game days at Lambeau Field, village officials say there’s a growing problem of people parking where they’re not supposed to.
“The purpose of that, obviously, is to control congestion traffic during those special events, so we don’t just have a lot of parked cars along the streets when people are trying to leave the stadium or leave the event itself,” said Patrick Leigl, Ashwaubenon’s village attorney.
Some violators have told public safety they won’t move their vehicle because the village’s $50 fine for illegal game day parking is similar to what they’d pay to park in a yard or lot near the stadium.
“So, there’s not really much of a deterrent or enforcement based on the current fee that is imposed right now,” said Leigl.
A village committee agreed to triple the fine amount to $150. It would go up if not paid within 15 days.
The full village board will need to approve it, but there’s already talk of getting new signs or stickers to warn drivers.
“They’re probably going to see that and go, ‘Wait a minute, I’m not going to park here now,’” said Jay Krueger, an Ashwaubneon Village Trustee.
The committee also agreed an ordinance is needed to regulate temporary video boards larger than 7.5 square feet.
“Historically, we have allowed them for Packers games in the Sports Entertainment District,” said Aaron Schuette, Ashwaubenon’s Community Development Director.
An ordinance provides the village an enforcement mechanism if needed. It will also tell businesses what they can and cannot do.
“Just make sure it’s not angled towards the street and the glare isn’t impacting non-property businesses or residences,” said Schuette.
Earlier this year, the village board rejected an ordinance that would have allowed permanent larger video boards, citing safety concerns.
The full village board will also need to sign off on the temporary video board ordinance.
The Village also recently provided an updated map for the draft campus.
Most of the map is not new, as FOX 11 has reported on the likely boundaries and locations for the draft theater and NFL Experience.
However, the village added updates showing more detailed locations for entrances, which will be on the west side of the stadium, as FOX 11 has previously reported.
The updated map also shows the locations for back of house operations.
Everything on the map is subject to change.
