BUCHANAN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man accused of his third OWI was arrested after striking the back of an Outagamie County Sheriff deputy’s patrol vehicle while he was trying to remove a deer carcass from the roadway.
It happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday when Deputy Brent Baxter stopped along County Highway CE near County Highway N in the town of Buchanan.
Deputy Baxter was stopped in the left eastbound lane of the highway and had his emergency lights on. While preparing to remove the deer Deputy Baxter was paying close attention to approaching traffic. Thankfully, Deputy Baxter was attentive as he noticed an approaching vehicle was failing to move out of the lane he was stopped in.
The large SUV did not move over and struck the patrol vehicle.
The patrol vehicle was sent 75 feet down the roadway. The SUV then careened across the median and nearly struck Deputy Baxter as he jumped out of the way. The SUV went across the westbound lanes and came to rest on the on ramp to westbound County Highway CE.
The driver of the SUV tried to run away but Deputy Baxter was able to catch up to him and took him into custody.
The 35-year-old man is accused of this third OWI.
