GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It seems Mother Nature is handing us a “treat” and then a “trick” this last week of October.
The “treat” being Tuesday’s record-smashing temperatures across Northeast Wisconsin — and the “trick” being the potential for rain on Halloween.
A warm breeze, shorts and t-shirts, tank tops — if not for the still-golden foliage at Voyageur Park in De Pere on Tuesday, you could be excused for mistaking it for the middle of summer, rather than the last couple days of October.
Not that Adrienne Hernandez and her son Jack, from De Pere, were complaining much.
“We’re trying to extend the summer as long as possible before we have to be inside for a lot of it. He likes the park, and I like the sun,” Hernandez said. “It’s beautiful.”
For Allouez resident Magdalena Sander, the call of the warm, sunny weather was just too much to resist.
“I actually left for the Broadview Y and I was like, ‘It’s too nice, I gotta come down here,'” Sander said. “Intended on going to the Y and I came out here to the trail because it’s such a beautiful day. Just wanted to see all the trees changing before I miss it. I think Thursday it’s supposed to rain.”
With Tuesday’s high in Green Bay topping the 80-degree mark, it’ll be a day that stays in the record books for a long while. Let’s take a a closer look at where this “blast of summer” sits historically.
Overall, it has been a very warm fall and a fairly warm October.
This fall — referring to meteorological fall, which starts Sept. 1 — is the fifth warmest on record in Green Bay through Oct. 29.
The month of October itself isn’t quite so high on the record list, sitting at the 12th warmest on record. The first half of the month was mild, but not remarkably so.
Hitting 80 degrees this late in the month, though, is very remarkable.
Aside from setting a record for the 29th, it’s the latest that Green Bay has hit the 80 degree threshold in the calendar year. The latest date before now was the 23rd, so we broke that record by almost a week.
And while it’s not that unusual to see 80 degree days in October in general, they almost always happen in the first half of the month. Of the 101 other times that it’s happened, all but 16 of them have been in the first half of the month.
It almost never happens in the back half of October. And until Tuesday, never this late in the year, period.
