(UW ATHLETICS) DENVER – Despite getting on the board first on the power play, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team fell, 6-1, at No. 1 Denver on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
Wisconsin (1-5-0, 0-2-0 Big Ten) lit the lamp 7:41 into the contest on the power play after Quinn Finley scored his fifth goal of the year. Denver (6-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) responded less than two minutes later, scoring three goals in the first period to head into the second with a two-goal lead. The Pioneers added two more in the final three minutes of the second and one 4:53 into the third to win, 6-1.
How it Happened
Sophomore forward Quinn Finley got the Badgers on the board first, 7:41 into the first period on the power play. Freshman forward Gavin Morrissey won the faceoff in the middle of the left circle and passed backward to junior defenseman Ben Dexheimer at the blue line. Dexheimer skated to the top of the left circle and passed to his right to find Finley, who ripped a one-time shot past DU goaltender Matt Davis to put home his fifth goal of the year.
The Pioneers tied the game up 1:40 later on a goal from Jack Devine.
Denver scored two more goals, one by Connor Caponi 12:34 into the period and one by Carter King at 18:19, to head into the middle frame with a 3-1 lead.
DU added two more goals in the final three minutes of the second period to make it 5-1. Samu Salminen scored with 2:03 left in the period just after a DU power play expired, then Jake Fisher added a power-play tally with 14 seconds remaining to send Denver into the third period with a four-goal lead.
The Pioneers added a sixth tally 4:53 into the third period on a goal from Sam Harris.
Wisconsin went 1-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill. UW finished the contest with a 30-26 deficit in shots on goal.
