MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A competency exam was ordered Tuesday for a man charged with making terrorist threats for allegedly threatening to enter a county office with an AR-15.
Bryan Korpal, 39, faces one charge of making terrorist threat and one misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge for the May 9 incident. He has pleaded not guilty.
Competency refers to a defendant’s ability to understand the court proceedings and assist in their own defense. It is not about the mental condition at the time of the alleged crime.
Results of the psychiatric exam will be discussed Nov. 27, court records show.
According to a news release from Marinette County District Attorney DeShea Morrow, Korpal threatened to come to the Human Services building with an AR-15 on May 9, and “made the sound of racking the slide of a firearm while on the phone with social workers. As a result of Korpal’s statements, the employees located at Marinette County Department of Human Services building were placed on high alert.”
