GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Officials are investigating a fire Friday at the Woodman’s in Grand Chute, which has been deemed “suspicious in nature.”
Shortly after 4 p.m., the Grand Chute Fire Department (GCFD) and several other agencies responded to Woodman’s Market at 595 North Westhill Boulevard for a reported structure fire.
Dispatchers said black smoke could be seen coming from a bathroom, the fire alarm was sounding and the store was being evacuated.
When crews arrived on scene, they found “a moderate smoke condition and small fire in one of the store bathrooms.” The blaze was extinguished by the store’s automatic fire sprinkler system.
GCFD remained on scene for approximately 90 minutes to assist Woodman’s staff with shutting down the fire sprinkler system, water removal and ventilation.
As a result of a properly functioning and maintained automatic fire sprinkler system in the building, the fire was confined to the room / area of origin and quickly extinguished.
No damage estimates were provided and no injuries were reported. Woodman’s remains open.
Authorities say the fire — which is considered to be “suspicious in nature” — is being jointly investigated by Grand Chute’s police and fire departments.
