MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Charges have been filed against a Pembine man in connection with a crash that killed two women in Marinette County.
Scott Mathis, 46, is charged with two counts of homicide by negligent operation/vehicle.
The June 1 crash at the intersection of highways B and W in the town of Grover, between Peshtigo and Coleman, resulted in the death of 44-year-old Elysia Kust, and her passenger, 73-year-old Mary Kust, both of Coleman.
According to the criminal complaint, witnesses told officers on scene that Mathis ran a stop sign at the intersection.
Mathis told deputies he was driving south on County W when his phone went off. He reached down to grab it and when he looked up, he had ran the stop sign and struck another vehicle, the complaint reads.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to support the family of the victims.
