MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Winnebago and Outagamie County leaders are still figuring out where to go from here, following last week’s major decision to close the UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities campus.
With the news still fresh on the minds of the Fox Valley community, the UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities campus Board of Trustees is set to meet Monday.
One agenda item includes calling for a public discussion on the future of the campus facilities.
According to budget documents, $348,616 dollars was budgeted for routine maintenance on the campus for 2024. That money comes from both Outagamie and Winnebago counties.
Winnebago County Executive Jon Doemel says his top concern is figuring out what’s possible for the assets on campus, such as the Barlow Planetarium and Weis Earth Science Museum.
“Those are things that I want to make sure are here for our communities for a long time to come. What happens with the classrooms is yet to be determined. We have to figure out what that best use is, but be open to all of it,” said Doemel.
A group that greatly values resources on the campus, more specifically the Barlow, is the Northeast Wisconsin Stargazers — or NEWSTAR, for short.
The group, which was formed in 1986, is dedicated to promoting amateur astronomy. They hold monthly meetings at the campus.
Rick Beal, president of the group, released a statement that read, in part:
Until further details are released by UW Oshkosh and the counties, we remain optimistic that a pathway to keeping these educational jewels in operation will be found.
Monday’s UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities Board of Trustees meeting is open to the public. It will begin at 1 p.m. at the campus.
