NE WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WLUK) – Monday’s high temperatures caused a number of traffic headaches in Northeast Wisconsin.
The heat resulted in pavement buckles occurring in various parts of the area, from the northbound lanes on US 151 at County Highway D near Fond du Lac to the left lane on I-41 southbound at US 45 in Oshkosh.
Another pavement buckling incident closed the right lane on I-41 southbound near Scheuring Road in Brown County, which led to quite a backup during rush hour Monday evening.
Additionally, the southbound I-41 approach to the Lake Butte des Morts bridge in Oshkosh will be closed Monday night into Tuesday morning “to repair a failing joint” caused by high heat.
Officials explain pavement can buckle when the weather quickly goes from cool to very hot. It causes pavement slabs to expand and push against one another, and if the pressure becomes great enough, the pavement may buckle and create unexpected bumps or dips in the road.
The Wisconsin DOT says that while it is difficult to predict if or where pavement buckling might occur, the following tips can help keep motorists safe:
Slow down, wear a seatbelt, and give the road your complete attention.
Be prepared to move over for roadside workers and highway crews as they repair damaged pavement.
Check the 511 Travel Information system for updates on incidents or delays.
Serious pavement issues should be reported to 911 with specific location information.
