APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Scouts came together Thursday to lay flags at the tombstones of veterans buried at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton.
More than a dozen troops showed up to lend a hand, setting out just shy of 5,000 flags ahead of Memorial Day.
“I think it’s important for us to come here and plant these flags so we can remember the ones who fought for us and protected us,” said River Cox, a nine-year-old scout.
Area scouts have been doing this for more than 20 years.
“It is a big part of Scouts. Just recognizing the sacrifices made by vets in the past,” said Tom Wolfert, cub master for Pack 3135.
Organizers say it’s a way to remember the fallen and teach the young Scouts about the importance of recognizing those who serve.
