KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Fundraising is underway in Kewaunee County to generate about $450,000.
“They are currently trying to build an inclusive playground. They are trying to raise money any way they can. They’ve been doing lots of fundraisers,” said Rachel Bauer, Kewaunee County Health Department Dietitian.
Rachel Bauer says the effort includes family-friendly events at Bruemmer Park and Zoo just west of Kewaunee. The park features goats, deer and other animals, but some say the current playground may need an upgrade.
“We need this playground. Because we want somewhere where everybody with all abilities can come and play and get some exercise,” said Bauer.
Bauer says an effort to build an accessible playground at the park includes a 5k-10k run-walk. The entry fee is $25 for adults, and $10 for children.
“All of the registration fees and everything go directly to the Bruemmer Park Inclusive Playground group. So, none of the cost comes back to the Health Department, or anybody organizing it. It just all goes to that group, for that inclusive playground fund,” she said.
The event also includes an update to the storybook trail system at the park.
“The original story was from Janet Tlachac-Toonen. And then, she’s agreed to give us a few more stories to add to this. So, every year, we’ll have a new story for the next 3-4 years,” said Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Promotions and Recreation Director.
Dave Myers says the new story called “The Studio Tree” will be officially unveiled on Saturday.
“That’ll be a nice addition to the park. And we’ll keep changing it up, so you have something new to see every year. And another added thing to do here at the park with your kids,” he said.
Organizers say there will also be raffles, and a cook out. Rachel Bauer says it will likely take years to raise enough money, but she says every bit counts.
“We hope to have a good turnout. And it’s only a couple of hours. So, it’s a great way to get some exercise before you start your normal activities for the day,” she said.
The event kicks off on Saturday at 9 a.m.
