DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) — A project to restore a popular landmark in Door County is just beginning.
Work on the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse at Peninsula State Park includes immediate stabilization, restoration, and reconstruction.
The lighthouse is 156 years old; and does not have electricity or running water.
The stabilization and renovation efforts revolve around issues the lighthouse has faced with the humidity and dampness. Electricity will be added to manage temperature and humidity within the lighthouse.
Reconstruction near the lighthouse will bring back a barn on the property and the summer kitchen.
The lighthouse, barn, and summer kitchen were all used during the the Duclon family’s tenure. The goal of the project is to restore the amenities to the time frame they lived on the property; from 1883 – 1918.
About 34 thousand people came and saw lighthouse and the property last summer season.
The Door County Historical Society is working to raise $3 million for the project; so far they’ve raised 1.1 million.
