GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Trevor Scheel was convicted Friday for the drunk driving hit-and-run crash which killed a 73-year-old woman who was crossing Mason Street. Sentencing is set for June 17.
Scheel, 24, pleaded no contest to hit & run causing death and homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle for the April 18, 2023 crash which killed Roselita Helms. A third count was dismissed.
He faces up to 25 years in the prison system for each count, with at least five years in prison for the OWI fatal count. Prosecutors will recommend an eight-year prison term and 10 years of extended supervision, according to court documents.
Police responded to the crash at W. Mason Street and 16th Avenue about 1:15 p.m., after a woman was struck by a vehicle.
A witness described seeing a BMW go past him at a high rate of speed.
“(The witness) saw the car hit a female who was crossing the street, causing her to fly approximately 10 feet in the air and then strike the ground,” the complaint states. “(The witness) saw that the car did not attempt to brake, slow down, or stop before striking the woman.”
Scheel was arrested at Mason and Clay streets a short time after the crash.
“I was an alcoholic last year, almost four months being sober, and I went to the casino today and had two vodka red bulls,” the complaint quotes Scheel as saying.
A preliminary breath test revealed a blood alcohol level of .222, nearly three times the legal limit of. 08.
During the field sobriety test, Scheel repeatedly said “you got me I did it,” and later said “I killed someone.”
Helms’ husband told police his wife may have been crossing Mason Street to get to a mailbox.
