MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Following audits showing significant financial challenges for Universities of Wisconsin campuses, Gov. Tony Evers says he will propose a large increase in state funding during the 2025-27 budget.
Evers’ announcement said the proposal would be the “largest increase in state support for the UW System in more than two decades.” He did not offer a dollar amount, however.
The governor typically releases his budget proposal in January or February, with the Legislature approving in summer.
“Investing in the UW System is critical if we want to address our state’s workforce challenges and be able to compete to recruit, train, and retain talented workers. Wisconsinites deserve a UW System that is fully funded, fully functioning, and that meets the needs of our students, our workforce, and our local communities. The Legislature must step up, and that’s what I’ll be asking them to do once again in my next proposed budget,” Evers said in his statement.
The independent audits released Thursday showed budget shortfalls at UW-Green Bay and Oshkosh. UWGB chancellor Michael Alexander disputed the report, saying internal projections showed a budget surplus by 2028. At UW-Oshkosh, chancellor Andrew Leavitt said staffing cuts announced last fall reduced an $18 million deficit to $3 million.
